The Mobile Data Situation in China
Internet access in China comes with a major caveat: many Western services are blocked by the Great Firewall. Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and many news sites are inaccessible without a VPN. However, having reliable mobile data is still essential for maps, translation apps, ride-hailing, and staying connected via local platforms.
eSIM Options
eSIMs have become the most convenient option for travelers. No need to swap physical SIM cards or visit a carrier store.
- Airalo: Offers a "Middle East & Asia" eSIM that includes China. Prices start at $8 for 1GB. Coverage uses China Unicom's network. Speeds are decent but not the fastest.

Local SIM Cards
If you're staying longer than 2 weeks, a local SIM might be more economical. China Unicom and China Telecom offer tourist SIM packages at airports. Expect to pay around 100-200 CNY for a month of data. You'll need your passport to register.
